The new generation of high definition TVs now incorporate new technology to enable viewers to watch movies and play games in 3D. This article talks about whether it is time to switch to this newer technology and more importantly highlights the best and most affordable model currently on the market.

In this new modern day and age, it can be increasingly difficult to know just which television is right for you. It's not simply a matter of picture and sound quality (although that is very important) but also the design, the thickness of the screen, the features and other aspects that help improve the television experience as a whole.

So what exactly should you look for when it comes to picking out a good modern TV with all the newest features?

- High definition is differentiated by the three terms 720p, 1080i and 1080p. Right now, you shouldn't settle for anything lower than 1080p as this is the market norm at the moment.

-3D technology means the TV has a high enough frequency to split the pictures into two slightly different images to give you the illusion of 3 dimensions. There are currently two types of 3D methods, active and passive. Active technology means that glasses are more expensive, but picture quality is miles ahead of passive technology. At the time of writing, Sony, Samsung and Panasonic all produce active shutter TVs and only LG do passive.

-LED technology is basically a new piece of technology that helps make the pictures brighter and crisper. This is not available on all TVs, only on the newest models. There are ways in which LED technology can be incorporated into LCD screens. First is LED backlighting lights up the entire screen however this is very uncommon and where it is found, it is extremely expensive. The second is LED edge technology which lights the screen up from the edge and spreads across the screen, this is a lot more common amongst high end models.

-In terms of connections, pretty much all high definition TVs nowadays have sufficient amounts of connections of varying types. But just to make sure, you should check that it has at least one HDMI input. This is the connection used for most modern applications such as PS3 input or Bluray Player input.

With all that in mind one particular model and brand distinguishes itself quite well from the competition. This is the Sony KDL46HX--- line of 3D ready TVs, in particular the KDL46HX803 which features all the top aspects listed above at a fraction of the costs of it's direct competitors. The screen displays arguably one of the best 2D images currently available to regular consumers with crystal clear pictures that don't suffer from motion blurring. Although there are some models of Sony or Samsung that are a bit better than this TV set, they generally cost about twice as much with not too much to show for it.
